What is colorwash?

Colorwashes are semi-transparent finishes, that let light travel through them to the base color behind.  Light then reflects back as broken color.  This broken color is what adds richness to old frescoed walls, the beauty of the ocean, or a deep blue lake.  Colorwash produces finishes with varied tones and hues on your wall, adding dramatic depth, and texture.
Solid colors have their uses, but when you want a richer more luscious look, put on your gloves, and pull out a bottle of Watercolor walls.

Instructions:

  • Each kit covers up to a 10'X12' room with a standard 50/50 water dilution.  Coverage increases over eggshell, or semi-gloss paint.
  • Bring color into any room, or give your furniture a fun face lift.
  • First, start with a clean wall.  Remove all dust, and make sure walls are not greasy, especially in kitchens and bathrooms, where you might have to wash the walls with a water and vinegar solution, or a mild detergent like TSP (get at your local hardware store).
  • Mix with water up to 50% on flat walls, and up to 25% on semi gloss walls.
  • Using the cloth included, dip it in the Colorwash mix, squeeze out extra mix and then wipe the walls in in a circular, or a figure 8 motion.   Keep moving, and work on small sections (about 3'X3'), so you can blend the edges.
  • Finishes are water based, and clean up easily with soap and water.
  • Play it safe.. always have adequate ventilation.  Avoid eye contact and wash hands after use.

Tips & Tricks:

  • If you are short on time, and you would like a darker or richer finish, just start with a more concentrated mix.  two parts Colorwash to three parts water works well.  Of course the more coats you put on, the more depth you'll have on your walls, but this technique produces great results.
  • On very dry, especially old flat painted walls, use a spray bottle, and very lightly "spritz" the section you are working on before applying the Colorwash.
  • do not keep re-working the same section of the wall.  Just keep moving in a circular, or a figure 8 motion.  Once the finish is dry, you can go back and touch up blemishes.
  • You can apply Colorwash over colored walls, but the final finish will be different than the color swatches.  Test in a hidden area first to test results.
